Effects of oral contraceptives on human plasma vitamin-A levels.

چکیده
Vitamin-A levels have been determined in healthy non-pregnant women and in women taking synthetic steroids to suppress ovulation. A significant increase has been found in those receiving oral contraceptives. Further work is necessary to determine whether this may affect the fetus in patients who become pregnant shortly after discontinuing oral contraception.

Serum vitamin A status in women users of lowdose oral contraceptives and in postmenopausal women taking hormone replacement therapy.
Background: One of the most important nonenzymatic antioxidant defense systems is vitamin A, and is considered as an important dietary agent for reducing cardiovascular diseases. Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the serum vitamin A status in women who used low-dose oral contraceptives (OCs) containing 0.15 mg levonorgestrol and 0.03 mg ethinyl estradiol and also in...

Purpose: Ascorbic acid has protective effects against coronary heart disease. These effects are attributed to its antioxidant properties and its relation to plasma lipids. This study investigated the effects of supplementing one gram of vitamin C per day on the serum serum lipoproteins of healthy 18 to 55 years old individuals in Iran. with oral conitraceptives. Without being able categorically to deny this possibility I think it unlikely for the following reasons. Retinol in human blood is predominantly bound to a specific transport-protedin known as the retinol-binding protein (RBP). Under physiological conditions RBP ibinds to prealbumin.4 The amount of free retinol is very small, indeed. Using a fluorescence assay5 measur...
متن کاملEffect of vitamin E and C supplements on lipid peroxidation and GSH-dependent antioxidant enzyme status in the blood of women consuming oral contraceptives.
BACKGROUND Oral contraceptives (OCs) may affect oxidative stress status. We aimed to assess whether supplementation with vitamins E and C reduced this OC effect. STUDY DESIGN One hundred twenty healthy female individuals were divided into three groups: A, control; B, untreated OCU (OC users); and C, treated OCU (OC users with vitamin E and C supplementation). In all cases, plasma glutathione ...
متن کاملEffects of Oral Isotretinoin on Serum Vitamin D Metabolites and Other Biochemical Markers of Bone Turnover and Calcium Homeostasis in Severe Acne
Background: Few studies have investigated on vitamin D metabolites Serum levels, and calcium homeostasis in humans receiving retinoids, despite a substantial amount of literature concerning retinoid-induced osteoporosis in animals. We prospectively measured vitamin D metabolites serum levels and calcium homeostasis and radiographic bone changes in short course treatment with oral isotreti...
